TL;DR Key takeaways
- Compare this year with last in Search Console to see which pages and queries moved.
- Prune or merge thin, outdated pages rather than letting them drag the site down.
- Review who links to you and look for local link opportunities for the new year.
- Refresh your Google Business Profile for 2025: hours, services, photos and reviews.
The run-up to Christmas is usually slow for SEO work, which makes it the perfect time to do the review nobody has time for the rest of the year. Whether you run a practice in Castletroy, a shop on O'Connell Street or a manufacturing firm out in Raheen, this checklist should take a couple of relaxed afternoons.
1. Look back properly in Search Console
Open Google Search Console, go to the Performance report and compare the last twelve months with the previous twelve. Look at queries and pages separately.
Ask yourself:
- Which pages gained the most clicks, and why? Can I do more of that?
- Which pages lost clicks? Did the content go stale, or did a competitor simply do it better?
- Are there queries with lots of impressions but few clicks? A better page title and meta description can often fix that.
- Is the site showing up for searches that include "Limerick" or nearby areas like Ennis, Shannon and Newcastle West?
Then check the Pages report under Indexing for anything important that is not indexed, and the Core Web Vitals report for problems on mobile.
2. Prune and merge tired content
Most small-business sites accumulate pages that no longer earn their keep: old news posts, a service you stopped offering, three thin blog posts on the same topic. These do not help, and they can dilute the pages that matter.
For each weak page, decide:
- Update it if the topic is still relevant and it has some traffic or links.
- Merge it into a stronger page on the same subject, with a redirect.
- Remove it with a redirect to the closest relevant page if it has no value at all.
Fewer, better pages almost always beat more, thinner ones.
3. Review your links
Links from other websites are still one of the strongest signals Google uses. You do not need a paid tool to start; Search Console's Links report shows the sites linking to you.
Look for easy local wins for 2025:
- Local business directories and your chamber of commerce listing.
- Suppliers and partners who could mention you on their sites.
- Local sponsorships, charity events or clubs you already support.
- Local news or community sites where you have a genuine story.

4. Refresh your Google Business Profile
Your Business Profile often matters more than your website for local searches. Before the new year:
- Set Christmas and New Year hours.
- Check your categories and services are still accurate.
- Add some new photos.
- Reply to any reviews you missed.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number match your website exactly.
5. Check the technical basics
A few quick things that are easy to miss: is your SSL certificate valid and renewing automatically? Do any contact forms quietly fail? Are there broken links on key pages? Is your site still fast on a phone? Ten minutes clicking through your own site the way a customer would can surface surprising problems.
6. Set three priorities for next year
Finish with a short list, not a long one. Three clear SEO priorities for 2025, written down, beat a vague intention to "do more SEO".
If you would rather have someone else do the audit, my €29 SEO report covers most of this list. You can also read more about SEO for Limerick businesses.
